Sligo scientists in superbug discovery

Scientists based at Sligo Institute of Technology have discovered that some essential oils are capable of killing 'superbugs'.

The findings shows the oils were effective against bacteria which were resistant to conventional antibiotics.

Among the most effective at killing MRSA strains were clove, lemongrass, citronella, thyme and cinnamon.
