Flood waters still rising in Mid-West

Flood waters are continuing to rise along the banks of the River Shannon in the Mid-West.

Limerick County Council says levels have risen by two inches since this morning, leading to the evacuation of 14 families from their homes.

The City Council said there is no immediate threat of flooding to properties within the city.

The ESB has said it will not be releasing any more water today from the Parteen Weir.

Meanwhile, homes and businesses in areas of Counties Galway, Westmeath and Offaly remain badly affected by flooding.

The Taoiseach has toured the midlands to see the extent of flooding there. He was confronted in Athlone with some residents saying he was not seeing the worst of the damage.

The Defence Forces have 140 personnel and 30 vehicles deployed in Cork, Ennis, Limerick, Galway and Athlone providing emergency assistance to civil authorities for flood relief.
