Bord Snip's agriculture cuts to be discussed

The consequences of An Bord Snip Nua's recommendations on how to save money in the agriculture sector will be discussed today.

Among Colm McCarthy's proposals were a cut in Teagasc staff numbers, the closure of the REPS 4 Scheme and ending the suckler cow scheme.

The Irish Farmers Association is to outline an alternative set of proposals when it appears before the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture later.

Fianna Fáil TD Johnny Brady, chairman of the committee, said savings had to be achieved in an efficient and balanced way.
