ETSC backs cut in Irish drink-drive limits

The European Transport Safety Council has given its backing to Transport Minister Noel Dempsey's plan to cut Ireland's drink-driving limits.

The future of the plan is currently in doubt after several Fianna Fáil backbenchers expressed strong opposition to the move, claiming it would damage rural pubs and communities.

The Taoiseach subsequently hinted that the measure would only be introduced in tandem with a similar reduction in the North.

The ETSC says cutting the drink-driving limit from 80mg to 50mg per 100ml of blood will save lives and prevent injuries on Irish roads.
