Minister gives green light to CIT expansion

The Minister for Education, Batt O’Keeffe, has given Cork Institute of Technology the go-ahead to buy a €5.8m site from US electronics firm Tyco-Sensormatic to expand its campus.

Minister O’Keeffe said: "Tyco-Sensormatic is leasing the land from the Industrial Development Agency Ireland.

"I’ve now authorised CIT to buy the 999-year lease from Tyco-Sensormatic.

"The acquisition of the 7.4 acre site and building will allow CIT to accommodate all apprentice activities on its Bishopstown campus.

"CIT is contributing €470,000 of its own resources towards the acquisition, with the rest coming from my capital budget for third-level institutions.

"The move signals the Government’s continuing commitment to expanding our higher education campus facilities in the building of the smart economy."
