Kirk nominated to become new Ceann Comhairle
Taoiseach Brian Cowen has officially nominated Louth Fianna Fáil TD Seamus Kirk to replace John O'Donoghue as Ceann Comhairle.
His nomination was seconded by Tánaiste Mary Coughlan, and is expected to be rubber-stamped presently.
The Taoiseach also took the opportunity to thank O'Donoghue for his service as Ceann Comhairle.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny proposed Donegal South West TD Dinny McGinely for the office, saying that the Fine Gael TD would restore “trust and integrity” to the office.
However, Labour Party leader Eamonn Gilmore indicated that his party would be supporting the nomination of Mr Kirk.
With Sinn Féin also indicating their support for the Fianna Fáil deputy, his confirmation is expected to be rubber-stamped presently.
