Gormley: Best people must be appointed to state boards

Green Party leader John Gormley says mechanisms need to be put in place to ensure that the right people are appointed to state boards.

Mr Gormley was responding to questions about the imminent resignation of the FÁS directors and their replacement with a more streamlined board.

Speaking in Dublin this morning, he said measures were needed to ensure the best people were chosen for state boards and that appointments were made in a fair and non-partisan way.

He also said the Government would have to examine remuneration and severance packages for higher-level civil servants.

It emerged last week that former FÁS chief Rody Molloy, who resigned last year amid controversy over lavish spending on foreign trips, got a €1m golden handshake from the Government.

Reports yesterday said he was allowed to keep his company car.
