A 10-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital after being knocked down by a car in Dundalk last night.

A 10-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital after being knocked down by a car in Dundalk last night.

The girl suffered serious head injuries in the incident, which happened at around 8pm on the Castletown Road.

She was initially taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, but has since been transferred to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin.

The Castletown Road is expected to be closed for most of the morning from Ecco Road Junction to Marian Park to allow for a technical examination at the scene.
