Investigations continue into Galway boating accident

The Marine Casualty Investigation Board is continuing its investigation into the sinking of a sailing boat in Galway Bay yesterday.

Sixty-seven-year-old Johnny Séan Jack MacDonnacha died in the accident, while his brother Josie is being treated in hospital, where his condition is understood to be stable.

The men were on board the Galway hooker, the ‘McHugh’, when it capsized while sailing from Kinvara to Rosaveel.

The crew of another boat managed to get the brothers out of the water.

However, one of them died shortly afterwards.

The MacDonnachas, described by their colleagues as the most experienced Galway hooker skippers, had been due to take part in a hooker regatta in Rossaveal today.

It has been cancelled as a mark of respect.
