Irish man drowns in Canada

A 20-year-old Irish man has drowned in Canada, after getting into difficulty while swimming with two friends off an island in Lake Ontario.

His friends managed to get ashore and raise the alarm, and his body was pulled from the water about half an hour later.

It is understood the young man was in Toronto for the summer on a working-holiday visa.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that they have been contacted by the Irish Embassy in Toronto, and said they were in the process of contacting the family.
