The new British ambassador to Ireland was formally approved by the Government tonight.

Diplomat Julian Beresford King succeeds David Reddaway, who has been in the post for the last three years.

The 44-year-old has served with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office since 1985, with postings in Paris, Brussels and New York.

Government ministers formally approved the appointment at a Cabinet meeting today.
