Two freed on police bail in connection with McDaid murder

Two men arrested in connection with the murder of a Catholic community worker who was kicked to death by a sectarian mob have been freed without charge, police said today.

The 60-year-old and 35-year-old were released on police bail pending further inquiries.

The suspects was taken into custody yesterday within hours of each other for questioning over the murder of Kevin McDaid, 49, in Coleraine, Co Derry in May.

The pair, who were detained in the town, were also quizzed about the attempted murder of Damien Fleming, 46.

Mr McDaid and Mr Fleming, both Catholic, were attacked by a mob in the Heights area of Coleraine.

The violence came after Rangers beat Celtic to the Scottish Premier League title.

Ten people have so far been charged in connection with the attack, six with murder.
