The North's first-ever Police Ombudsman, Nuala O'Loan, has been appointed to the British House of Lords.

Ms O'Loan served in the Ombudsman's role between 1999 and 2007 and oversaw several controversial investigations, including an inquiry into the police handling of the Omagh bombing.

She is currently the Irish Government's roving ambassador for conflict resolution, as well as its special envoy for Timor Leste and for women, peace and security.

She is also working with the British Home Office on a project looking at allegations of abuse by people being deported from the UK.
