More than half of water treatment plants fail EU standards

New figures from the Environmental Protection Agency reveal that more than half of all waste water plants do not meet EU standards.

That is despite 90% of areas having adequate treatment facilities and an investment of more than €2.5bn in the past 10 years.

Two-fifths of treatment plants either do not use the facilities available to them or fail to conduct enough testing to make their results valid.

The EPA has warned all local councils to better monitor their facilities.
