A teenage girl has drowned at a popular swimming spot in the Chapelizod area of Dublin.

A teenage girl has drowned at a popular swimming spot in the Chapelizod area of Dublin.

The 16-year-old was with a group of friends at the Wren's Nest Weir near the Strawberry Beds when the incident happened at about 4pm yesterday.

She is understood to have lost her footing and become trapped under a block of wood.

The emergency services were called to the scene, but despite efforts to resuscitate the teenager, she was pronounced dead at Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown.
