Harney to consider inquiry into Shine allegations

Health Minister Mary Harney has promised to examine the possibility of holding an inquiry into allegations of sexual abuse by former hospital consultant Michael Shine.

Dr Shine was acquitted of indecently assaulting patients at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda during a court case six years ago.

However, he was struck off the medical register last year for misconduct relating to his behaviour towards three male patients.

Dozens of complaints have been made against the 77-year-old and a lobby group, Dignity 4 Patients, has been pushing for an inquiry into the matter.

The group met Ms Harney yesterday and received a promise that she would examine the case for an inquiry, in consultation with the Attorney General.
