Barroso asks for second term of office

The president of the European Commission today asked for the backing of EU leaders for a second five-year term of office in charge of the EU bureaucracy.

Jose Manuel Barroso said the European Parliament elections confirmed that voters wanted a strong and ambitious European Union, and that he was seeking a new mandate from an EU summit in a fortnight.
