Counting of European election votes underway

In the European elections votes are being counted at the moment.

In the East, Fine Gael's Mairead McGuinness looks set to top the poll.

Labour's Nessa Childers is expected to take the second seat at the expense of Fine Gael, who held two seats going into the vote.

Fianna Fáil's Liam Aylward will be hoping for transfers from his running mate to take the final seat ahead of Fine Gael's John Paul Phelan.

A tight battle is expected between Independent Marian Harkin and Libertas leader Declan Ganley for the third and final seat in the North West.

The first and second seats are expected to be taken by Fianna Fáil's Pat the Cope Gallagher and Fine Gael's Jim Higgins.
