Counting begins in the European elections today with Fine Gael hoping to build on landmark victories which made it the largest party in the State for the first time.

The party took more than one third of the seats in the local elections while journalist-turned politician George Lee romped home in the Dublin South by-election, sealing an emphatic win on the first count.
