Cowen to meet groups representing abuse victims
Taoiseach Brian Cowen is due to hold talks this evening with groups representing victims of institutional child abuse.
The meeting has been arranged to discuss the fallout from the recent Ryan Report into the widespread physical, sexual and emotional abuse of children in institutions run by religious orders.
Since the publication of the report, support groups have been calling for statutory guidelines on child protection to ensure such abuse can never be repeated.
They also want the Government to name a date for a referendum on children's rights.
The Taoiseach is also due to meet the religious congregations involved in abuse tomorrow to press them for a greater contribution towards the victims.
