Two killed in car crashes

A man and a woman were killed tonight in two separate road crashes in the west of the country.

A 23-year-old male passenger died in a two-car collision on the N69 between Limerick and Kerry at 6pm.

Another passenger was also injured in the accident, while the two motorists escaped unharmed.

Just over half a hour later a woman in her 50s died in a three-vehicle collision at Bahola, Co Mayo.

Two other people were also injured in the accident.

The deaths – the first two of the Bank Holiday Weekend – takes the number of those killed so far this year to 110.

Gardaí and road safety chiefs have warned motorists to take extra care over the weekend.

Crash investigators have closed both scenes of the road accidents and diversions are in place.
