A 25-year-old Limerick woman is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot on the holiday island of Lanzarote yesterday.

A 25-year-old Limerick woman is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot on the holiday island of Lanzarote yesterday.

The incident happened in the small village of Mancha Blanca.

The woman is believed to have been shot in the abdomen by her 45-year-old Spanish partner, who then turned the gun on himself.

He is also in a serious condition, but reports this morning say both the man and the Irish woman are expected to survive.

The couple reportedly have a six-month-old child.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the Limerick woman's family.
