Man arrested in connection with canal death

A 41-year-old man was arrested today in connection with the death of a mother-of-four in the Grand Canal last year.

A 41-year-old man was arrested today in connection with the death of a mother-of-four in the Grand Canal last year.

Yvonne O’Shea died after she went into the water from a narrow towpath road in Co. Laois on the night of Saturday, November 22, 2008.

Her four sons were in a car beside the canal, between Vicarstown and Athy, when she died.

Initially Ms O’Shea’s death was treated as a drowning but within days detectives believed she had been murdered.

The arrested man was detained and taken to Portlaoise Garda Station at 7.20am. He was being questioned over the murder under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.

On the day of the incident local gardaí were quickly on the scene and officers entered the canal in an attempt to save Ms O’Shea.

It was reported the car in which Ms O’Shea had been travelling with her husband and their four children had broken down beside the canal.
