Efforts made to end Derry rioting

Efforts are continuing in Derry to quell rioting at a notorious interface in the city.

Three youths were arrested last night after five nights of rioting between gangs of young Protestant and Catholic men.

The three youths aged between 11 and 13 were arrested after a police officer was injured during sectarian clashes.

The police man was hit on the leg and chest with missiles thrown during trouble at the Fountain/Bishop Street interface.

It is the sixth night in succession that rival groups have thrown stones and other missiles at each other.

Last Friday, a man in his 70s escaped injury after a window in his sheltered accommodation was smashed, while on Sunday a taxi driver was hit by a large stone thrown at his cab and on Monday two policemen were injured when they were hit with bricks.
