A two-year-old boy died after he was run over by a lorry in a farm accident in the North, it was revealed today.

Tadhg Sweeney was playing outside his family home at Mullaslin, Carrickmore, Co Tyrone, when the accident happened on Monday night.

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating.

Neighbour and Sinn Féin councillor Ann Marie Fitzgerald visited the home last night and said relatives were devastated.

“The child was the youngest of four boys and was playing outside when the tragic accident involving a lorry occurred,” she said.

“As a parent and local representative, I wish to extend deepest sympathy with the Sweeney family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Sources said the boy had been run over by the lorry but the exact circumstances are still being probed.

A police spokesman said officers were called at around 6.30pm.

“The child was pronounced dead on arrival at Altnagelvin Hospital,” he confirmed.
