The Lord Mayor of Dublin has welcomed plans to introduce direct mayoral elections in the capital next year.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin has welcomed plans to introduce direct mayoral elections in the capital next year.

Voters in the city will have the right to elect the mayor, who will have increased powers over transport, planning, housing, water services and waste management.

The current Lord Mayor, Eibhlin Byrne, says she believes the move will help to develop Dublin economically.
