GRA seeks tougher sentences for car theft
The Garda Representative Association is calling on the Minister for Justice to introduce tougher sentences for people caught stealing cars.
The call follows the death of Garda Robert McCallion at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin yesterday afternoon.
The 29-year-old, from Swinford in Co Mayo, was knocked down while investigating reports of a stolen car in Letterkenny on March 26.
Books of condolence have been opened at Ballina, Letterkenny and Swinford Garda Stations.
The GRA says tougher sentences are needed to deter people from stealing cars.
