Garda fighting for life after being struck by car
A young garda is fighting for his life in hospital after being struck by a car in Co Donegal this morning.
The incident happened on the Ramelton Road in Letterkenny at around 4.30am.
The officer is believed to have been hit by the vehicle as he attempted to foil a suspected car robbery.
A second garda also sustained minor injuries.
A 17-year-old youth and a man in his 20s have been arrested in connection with the incident.
The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Dermot Ahern TD, today said he was outraged by the incident.
Ahern said he spoke with the Garda Commissioner to express his hopes that the injured garda would make progress from his very serious injuries.
“What occurred near Letterkenny this morning was the actions of a mindless individual who appeared intent on inflicting serious injury if not death," Ahern said.
"This brave young Garda and his colleagues were carrying out their duties in the interests of public safety. The driver of the vehicle involved behaved in such a reckless manner that he had absolutely no regard for human life.”
“I will remain in close contact with senior Garda management on this matter.”
