Police in the North arrested up to 19 people during St Patrick's Day disturbances in the Holylands area of south Belfast yesterday afternoon.

PSNI officers were called to the area - which contains a large number of student residences - following reports of damage to a car.

A large number of students celebrating St Patrick’s Day were on the streets and a number of cans and bottles were thrown at the police before calm was restored.

Similar disturbances have also taken place in previous years.

Politicians are calling on Belfast's universities to take action to crack down on the students' behaviour.
