Up to 12 people have been arrested following riot scenes in the North.
Police were pelted with bottles in south Belfast after hundreds of St Patrick’s Day house parties spilled on to the street.
At about 3pm, heavily-armoured officers were called to Carmel Street in the heart of the city’s student land by reports of damage to a car.
They had to form a line to force troublemakers back. Land Rovers blocked both sides of the street, which was closed to traffic.
Drunken youths were left roaming around the area, known as the Holylands.
A spokeswoman for Queen’s Students’ Union said students had to take responsibility for their community and condemned the violence.
There had been a heightened security presence in the city with thousands of revellers expected.
