Taxi unions to hold talks with Transport Minister

Unions representing taxi drivers are due to hold talks with the Transport Minister today as part of their campaign for a freeze on the issuing of new licences.

The meeting follows a series of protests by drivers who say they are no longer able to make a decent living due to the large number of taxis on the roads.

Yesterday, an independent report compiled for the Taxi Regulator said there was no need for a moratorium on licences as the market was reaching its natural equilibrium.

The taxi unions are expected to press Minister Noel Dempsey to reject the finding during today's meeting.
