Police in the North are investigating a bomb hoax in Portrush, Co Antrim last night.

A number of properties in the Dhu Varren area were evacuated following the discovery of a number of suspicious objects.

Controlled explosions were carried out, but the alert was later declared to be a hoax.

Meanwhile, the PSNI is also investigating a small blast caused by an explosive device in a south Belfast alleyway last night.

The blast happened in Rutland Street, off the Ormeau Road, just after 10pm.
