Two arrested after armed post office raid

Gardaí today arrested two men after foiling an armed robbery on a post office.

A lone raider entered Gorey Post Office at 11.30am brandishing a suspected handgun and stole cash after threatening staff.

He and an accomplice escaped in a getaway car which was later pursued by gardai who recovered the cash.

Two staff members and several customers were present in the post office at the time of the robbery.

Gardaí said one man entered the building armed with what was believed to be a handgun.

He escaped with a bag of cash on a motorbike driven by an accomplice but both raiders then switched to a waiting getaway car.

“Gardaí intercepted this vehicle and arrested two men,” said a Garda spokesman. “The stolen cash was recovered.”

The spokesman refused to reveal how much cash was taken.

Both men are currently being detained under Section 30 of Offences Against the State Act at Gorey garda station.

They can be held for questioning for up to 72 hours.

A spokesperson for the post office said the incident was over in a few minutes.

“The staff are a bit shaken up as you can imagine,” he said.

“It all happened very quickly. The gardaí were very quick to react.”

He added: “I don’t know how much money was recovered.”
