Cowen: Public spending cuts 'unavoidable'

Taoiseach Brian Cowen has announced to the Dáil the Government’s emergency scheme designed to slash public spending by €2bn.

Amongst the money-saving measures is a plan to scrap pay increases for public servants, and a new levy on public service pensions.
