Cowen unveils major spending cuts

Embattled Taoiseach Brian Cowen today faced down powerful public sector unions after he pushed ahead with €2bn in spending cuts.

Mr Cowen announced €1.4bn in public pension levies even though the proposals were roundly rejected by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions in overnight talks.
