Cowen announces €1.4bn levy on public service pensions

The Government is scrapping pay increases for the public service and imposing a new levy on public service pensions, it was confirmed this afternoon.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen told the Dáil that emergency legislation is being drafted to impose a cut on the pensions of public sector employees, which will save the State around €1.4bn.
