Harney defends €2bn spending-cut gamble

Health Minister Mary Harney today defended the Taoiseach’s social partnership gamble to secure €2bn in spending cuts by tomorrow’s deadline – and said she hopes it can “save the country.”

Government officials are hoping to finalise tough bargaining talks with unions and employers before the Cabinet meets in the morning.
