The Cabinet is due to meet later this morning to discuss ways to cut public spending this year following the massive decline in tax receipts.

The Government wants to cut around €2bn from its spending budgets for 2009 and has already angered trade unions by indicated that it plans to secure the majority of the reduction by cutting public-sector pay.
