Teen accused of car theft and drink-driving remanded on bail
A 17-year-old north Dublin boy charged with motor theft and drink-driving following a short traffic pursuit has been remanded on bail.
The teenager was charged at the Children’s Court with driving a stolen car and driving while over the alcohol limit, at Sillogue Avenue, in Ballymun, in north Dublin, on October 5 last.
Judge Ann Ryan heard that it was being alleged that gardai had received reports of a stolen car “doing the rounds” in the Sillogue area.
The court heard that gardaí came across the teenager driving dangerously and they activated their patrol car’s lights and sirens to indicate to him to stop. “The driver went through bollards then it hit off a bollard and he fled the car,” the court was told.
Other vehicles had to break suddenly to avoid being hit by the teenager, Judge Ryan was also told.
On his arrest a quantity of alcohol was found in his system which led to him also being charged with drink driving. However, the alcohol level was detailed in court.
Defence solicitor Michelle Finan said that she was seeking disclosure of the State’s evidence and time to take instructions from her client.
The teenager, who was accompanied to court by his mother, was remanded on bail to appear again next month when he is to enter pleas to the charges.
