Ahern: 'I had duty to pass on McKevitt letter'
Dermot Ahern has defended his decision to forward a letter written on behalf of Real IRA leader Michael McKevitt to former Justice Minister Michael McDowell.
Reports yesterday revealed that Mr Ahern passed on correspondence from Mr McKevitt's wife complaining about his treatment in Portlaoise Prison.
Speaking in Dublin today, the current Justice Minister defended his actions, claiming he had a duty to respond "with compassion" to any family that approaches him for help.
He denied that his actions had compromised his position.
