Public sector trade unions could reportedly be prepared to do a deal on wage increments and special out-of-hours payments as part of efforts to bring the public finances under control.

Reports this morning say some union leaders have indicated a willingness to defer or reduce these entitlements as long as their members' pay levels are protected.
