The Government today denied any serious rift between senior ministers over the worsening economic crisis as the Opposition demanded details of plans to slash public jobs and wages.

But despite assurances that the Cabinet was united over the way forward, strains within the coalition were laid bare when Justice Minister Dermot Ahern rubbished a Green Party suggestion that several junior ministers be dropped to save money.
