The Taoiseach Brian Cowen has indicated that he is willing to implement measures to halt the deterioration in the public finances without the agreement of the social partners.

The Government is planning to cut €2bn in spending this year and reports this morning say it wants to secure the majority of the savings by cutting public-sector pay and staffing levels.
