Ombudsman investigating prisoner death in Co Derry

The North's Prisoner Ombudsman is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an inmate at Magilligan Jail in Co Derry yesterday morning.

Twenty-five-year-old Richard Bernard Gilmore is understood to have taken drugs shortly before he was found dead in his cell.

The Prisoner Ombudsman is investigating the possibility that a toxic batch of illegal drugs may be circulating inside the jail.

The Prison Service has extended its sympathy to Mr Gilmore's family.
