Live Register figure up 71% in past 12 months

More than 16,000 more people signed on the Live Register in the final month of last year, according to the latest figures from the CSO.

The statistics agency says the total number of people on the dole surged to 293,500 in December, representing an increase of 71% throughout 2008.
