The Navan Chamber of Commerce has claimed that any job losses at Tara Mines would have a devastating impact on the local economy.

Up to 370 workers at the zinc mine in Meath were put on protective notice yesterday, after a dispute over cost-cutting measures.

Management have given workers two weeks to accept their proposals or face the prospect of redundancy.

SIPTU, the largest union in the company, is organising a meeting for its members at the plant this evening.

President of the Navan Chamber of Commerce, Mary Sadlier said that the local workforce depends on the mine.
