PSNI get more time to quiz Newry murder suspects

Detectives investigating the murder of a pensioner at her home in Newry over the festive period have been granted more time to question two people held in connection with the case

The 39-year-old man and 42-year-old woman were arrested just hours after 81-year-old Maire Rankin was found dead on Christmas morning.

She had died from multiple injuries.

The PSNI can hold the two suspects until noon today before they must be charged or released.

The pair were known to Ms Rankin, but are not related to her.
