Conor Cruise O'Brien is due to be laid to rest at Glasnevin cemetery in Dublin today.

The 91-year-old, who was also a diplomat, journalist, author and respected academic, passed away at his home in Howth last Thursday.

Dr O'Brien was elected as a Labour Party TD in 1969 and served as Minister for Posts and Telegraphs from 1973 until he lost his Dail seat in 1977.

He also served as a civil servant at the Department of Finance and External Affairs and worked at the United Nations.

His funeral mass will take place at 11.30am today at the Church of the Assumption in Howth.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, and six grandchildren.
