The Money Advice and Budgeting Service said it often sees an increase in people seeking its help in the New Year due to the financial pressures of Christmas.

It said many people have problems paying their bills in January.

MABS has advised people to pay cash where possible and avoid using credit cards.

Spokesperson for the organisation, Michael Culloty, said budgeting is key.
