DUP councillor blames fire on sectarianism
An elderly DUP councillor whose Co Tyrone property was set on fire blamed sectarian arsonists today.
An outhouse behind the Ballygawley home of Sammy Brush, 66, was destroyed overnight.
Mr Brush, who has been singled out several times before, said: “The situation could be much worse as my oil tank which was close by, did not catch fire. Those behind this clearly thought little of those in my house or even my neighbours.
“I serve all my constituents to the best of my ability and make not distinction between one religion or another. Yet I am convinced that this attack was motivated by nothing other than sectarianism.”
The fire service was called to deal with the blaze.
A police spokesman said: “The information from the owner was that the shed contained tools, gas cylinders and an oil tank.
“The owner has made an allegation that the fire was arson and a full examination of the scene will take place when the danger posed by over-heated gas cylinders has abated.”
DUP Assembly member Lord Morrow said the incident would be condemned by all right-thinking people.
“Those responsible for this further intimidation tactic are nothing short of cowards.
“They work in the cover of darkness and I know they do not represent the thoughts of the majority of the good people in Ballygawley.
“Cllr Brush has had a number of attacks on his property for no other reason than a small group in the locality do not like his religion.
“There is no place in our society for such blatant sectarianism.”
